When the gun goes off Sunday morning to start Ironman Arizona at Tempe Beach Park, The Woodlands' Michael Collins will be one of ten Ironman athletes who are scheduled to attempt to complete their 10th consecutive Ironman Arizona.
Entering the 2010 race, there were 17 legacy finishers. That year's race claimed three victims and each of the last two years, an athlete each year didn't make it to the swim start.
However, two of the 12 who finished last November -- New Mexico's Cathy Tibbetts and California's Jason McFaul -- are not listed on the Ironman Arizona Participant List posted at Ironman.com.
Tibbetts, an optometrist from Farmington, New Mexico, has completed 30 Ironmans since 2005, including nine finishes at both Ironman Arizona and the World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
Nonetheless, here are the cumulative finishing times of those dozen triathletes who have posted nine (9) straight Ironman Arizona finishes:
102:49:45 - Michael Collins, The Woodlands, Texas
102:58:10 - Craig Norquist, Paradise Valley, Arizona
105:08:25 - Luis Alvarez, Tlalnepantla, Mexico
109:14:29 - Cathy Tibbetts, Farmington, New Mexico
109:40:10 - Jason McFaul, Chino Hills, California
111:20:37 - Curtis Brooks, Maryland Heights, Missouri
112:58:23 - Heidi Erpelding, Glendale, Arizona
114:47:40 - David Stroup, Lancaster, California
120:31:50 - Trent Larson, Mesa, Arizona
124:07:40 - Marc Brooks, Phoenix, Arizona
134:58:28 - Edward Bernal, Glendale, Arizona
142:06:04 - Anthony Romania, Chandler, Arizona
Interestingly, Norquist, an emergency medicine physician, was Chrissie Wellington's home stay, according to her book, "A Life Without Limits", when she set the then-Ironman world record of 8:36:13 in 2010.
Mexico's Luis Alvarez is the well-known Team Timex athlete who completed his 100th career Ironman last month at the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
Erpelding, a physical therapist, is one of the most decorated volleyball players ever to come out of the College of William & Mary in Virginia as a three-time Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year (1986-1988)
Both Larson and Curtis Brooks was two of the first 100 to receive inaugural Ironman Legacy lottery slots for Kona in 2012. Larson finished in 12:25:14 while Brooks completed the iconic course in 13:32:55.
Bernal owns at least 21 Ironman finishes, including the inaugural Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas in 2011.
After 2010, there were just 14 who remained. They were as follows:
80:04:35 -- Craig Norquist, Paradise Valley, Arizona
